Rhenish Girls' High School

Rhenish Girls’ High School aims to provide its learners with an education of the highest quality and is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning.  All learners, regardless of their abilities and backgrounds, are encouraged to develop their full potential, to strive for excellence, and to become responsible, caring and productive citizens.

The Rhenish Institute was founded in May 1860 and was initially dual medium (English/German). It has been a State school since 1901.  Having celebrated our 150th Anniversary in 2010, Rhenish is the oldest girls’ school in the country and was also the first boarding school for girls. Rhenish has grown from a small school of 8 missionaries’ daughters in 1860 to our current enrolment of 706 girls, of which 150 stay in the hostel.

We are very proud of our girls’ academic results: they have achieved excellence time and again, with the school having recorded a 100% pass rate as far back as anyone can remember - over twenty years. 2011 was no exception and Rhenish once again excelled with 21 A candidates, 98% of the matrics qualifying to continue with tertiary studies and 209 subject A's. The continued academic success of Rhenish's matric class is largely due to the efforts of our dedicated, professional and highly trained staff and to our belief in a holistic education.

We concentrate both on the development of the individual as well as on academic excellence. Our teachers together with a well-established Learner Support Programme, ensure that the girls develop their study, time-management, planning and organizational skills and that they involve themselves in all aspects of school life. Apart from the academic programme, Rhenish offers a wide range of activities - sporting and cultural - from which our girls can choose.  There is definitely something for everyone and Rhenishers are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of school life so they may take full advantage of the Rhenish experience.
