Achievers

Rhenishers participate in various subject olympiads, The Afrikaans Taalbond Examination, The UCT Mathematics Competition, The regional Expo for Young Scientist Competition, Science Expo, Creative Writing courses, The World Schools’ Debating, Model United Nations Debate, Quizzes, Eisteddfods, Outings, Arts Festivals, Career Expos, etc.


2008 YOUNG COMMUNICATORS’ AWARDS

The annual Young Communicators’ Awards (YCA) is an important public speaking competition for Grade 11 and 12 learners whose first or home language is not English.  The Sowetan and Anglo American jointly sponsored since 1994.

There are various elimination rounds in the contest, which culminates in a national competition. 

All high schools in Circuit 1 of the Westcoast-Winelands EMDC were invited to enter two learners to participate in the first round on Monday 25 February.

The Circuit 1 winner was Anna-Marie Müller, of Rhenish Girls’ High.  Mika Stanvliet, also a Rhenish learner, and Edwin September of Kylemore High, tied in second position. 

Schools that participated were Bloemhof Girls’ High School, Cloetesville Senior Secondary, Kylemore High School, Lückhoff High School, and Rhenish Girls’ High School.

Gene McAravey, as part of the Western Cape debating team, participated in 2007 National competition. Her team reached the quarter-finals. She was placed 14th overall and was invited to participate in the SA Team's trials that were held in January 2008.


ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

2008 National Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Competition

Jessica Alderman received a prize for the best research project targeting Environmental Sciences at the regional competition and then represented our school and this region at the National competition in Pretoria this past school holiday. She won a gold medal. Congratulations!  Read more about her project.

2007 National Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Competition

Two Rhenishers, Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen and Anna-Marie Müller, took part in the 2007 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists National Competition in Pretoria in September 2007.

They achieved great results, collecting a gold and bronze medal respectively. Helene-Mari (left) researched the public's perception of climate change and Anna-Marie (right) the need for vitamin supplement consumption by teenagers.
