Athletics

Athletics at Rhenish has grown to a point where we are now also able to send a fairly strong team to events (click here for a list of 2008 events).

2008/2009 season

Interhouse Athletics: Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium was transformed into a noisy hub of green, red and yellow, with girls running, jumping, leaping, throwing, tossing and cheering, as Terlinden, Weber and Van der Stel houses contended fiercely for position.  The cheerleaders were brightly dressed, exceptionally disciplined and full of spirit. The new Athletics coaches, Mr Bruwer and Mr Schreuder were on hand to check on performances, and we were all gratified to see records falling and results improving.

We look forward to vastly improved results in the new athletics season.  Thanks also to Mrs Sherna Smith and Ms Sam Henery for their enthusiasm and support of the new 4M Team, which has just been announced!

The day was won by Terlinden, closely followed by Weber and Van der Stel. Well done to you all!

The Senior Victrix Ludorum was Dominique Scott and the Junior Victrix Ludorum, Michelle Bolognesi. Congratulations to them too!

2008/2009 season

Dominique Scott competed in the South African High Schools Track and Field Championships in Rustenberg from 29 - 30 March.

She ran extremely well at this altitude venue and gained invaluable experience. Running in the girls U17 division Dominique placed 2nd in the finals of the 1500m (4.35.89) winning the silver medal. She also placed 3rd in the 3000m (10.08.83) winning the bronze medal.

On the strength of these 2 wonderful achievements Dominique has been included in the National Schools' Athletics Team. She will be representing South Africa at the COSSASU Championships from 1 - 3 May, venue still to be made known.  She is also representing Western Province at the SA Youth and Junior Championships in Pretoria on 18 - 19 April.

Congratulations and sincere good luck wishes to our girls who were selected to represent Boland and who will be taking part in the Western Cape Athletics Championships at the Bellville Velodrome on 12 March: Amy Burger, Dominique Scott, Jenna Jade Bury and Carla Beyers. We will be holding thumbs for you!

Amy Burger was also placed 3rd in the U18 Section at the SA Triathlon Championships held in East London on the weekend of 16 – 17 February.

Congratulations too to the following u14s who performed well at the Boland Championships.  Had Boland fielded an u14 Team they would have been in it!  Kelly Slater, 1st in the 400m; 3rd in 100m - Personal Best times for her; Nicole van der Walt 2nd in 200m.  Well done to them!

Results by Rhenish athletes in the Boland Central Championships on 8 March:

  • Amy Burger came 1st in the 1500m U/19 and the 3000m U19
  • Dominique Scott came 1st in the 1500m U/17 and the 3000m U17
  • Carla Beyers came 2nd in the 3000m U17, running a personal best time that saw her qualify for SA Schools’ Champs.
  • Nicole van der Walt came 1st in the 200m hurdles U/14, and 3rd in the 80m hurdles U/14
  • Louisa Reith came 2nd in the 100m U/19

  • Tracy Johnson came 4th in high jump U/14

All of these girls, plus Michelle Krebbs (Gr 7, Rhenish Primary School – an honorary member of the RGHS athletics team), will now be taking part in the Boland Championships on Saturday 1 March.  This is the biggest number of Rhenish athletes that has ever got through the rigorous qualifying rounds to compete
in the Boland Champs.

Congratulations to all of you!

RHENISH RISING STAR: Dominique Scott

Dominique Scott, a Grade 10 learner, has made a terrific start to the athletics season.    At the Janine Visser Meeting on 1 February, she beat top athletes from Bloemhof, Tygerberg, Hugenote, Bredasdorp & Caledon High to win the 800m in 2:14.01 and the 1500m in 4:33.02.  These times were both personal bests for Dominique and are in fact World Youth Qualifying times.

At the Maties’ First Years’ Meet at Coetzenburg this past Friday evening the athletes had to battle a howling wind.  Not deterred by this, or by the fact that she was by far the youngest in the field, Dominique once again won both the 800m and the 1500m – to the amazement and chagrin of the students participating!

Dominique has now been invited to attend the TOP-20 Schools Meet in Bloemfontein on Friday 15 February.  Although she will be competing as an individual, she will be running in her Rhenish colours – and all of Rhenish will be holding thumbs for her!

Although athletics is her first love, Dominique is no slouch in the water, either.   She scored valuable points for Weber in the recent Inter-House Gala, was a member of the Rhenish swimming team that beat Herchel in the Rondebosch Gala last week, and will be competing in the 4M Gala, at Paarl on Tuesday 12 February.  Talk about an all-rounder…

Watch this lass – she is going places!!

Dominique participated in the WP Athletics Club Championships on 7 & 8 March, and came first in both her 1500m and 3000m events.  A small team has been chosen to compete at the ASA Junior Championships in Petersberg on 18 & 19 April and Dominique will be representing the U17 girls. She will be competing for Western Province.

Running for Boland at the Western Cape Schools Championships on 12 March, Dominique pulled off another double, once again coming first in the 1500m and 3000m events. She has now been chosen to compete at the SA High Schools Championships in Rustenburg on 27 & 28 March. She will be running for the Western Cape Team, in the U17 girls’ section.

We are enormously proud of Dominique and wish her the best of luck in the upcoming meets.
