At Rhenish we feel it is important not only to
serve our school, but also to make a positive
contribution in our community. SOCS is a young
and growing society. We aim to make a difference
in the community and to help those people and
organisations that need help the most.
It is not often that you get teenagers clamouring for the chance to give up the better part of their Sunday to help others. But Rhenishers have a proud tradition of community service, and one appeal to the school was enough to draw a veritable flood of volunteers to partner mentally disabled learners from Dorothea School at the One-to-One Day in Cape Town last weekend.
There was lots of entertainment and the Good Hope Centre was jam-packed with food & games stalls. Our girls made sure that their charges filled more than one goodie-bag, and walked away with many exciting prizes. By the end of the day the Rhenishers were hot, sticky, and bone-weary – but their smiles never faded and their helpfulness never flagged.
Thank you girls- for being selfless, and for making a difference. We are privileged to have people like you in our school!
One of the biggest projects we support is the
Stellenbosch Feeding Scheme. Throughout the course
of the year each grade gets a turn to bring food
which is used to feed hungry children and teenagers
in the Stellenbosch area. Our commitment to this
project spans more than a decade, as does our
support of another worthy local event, viz. the
Medallion Cycle Race. Each year girls get up at
5 a.m. on the first Sunday in February to man
the registration tables for this race, then make
mushroom burgers and hand out Coke to the weary
finishers. The event is organised by Stellenbosch
Rotary Club and all the money that is made goes
to local charities. This year’s race on
3 February raised over R100,000.
Last year we had a civvies day to raise funds
for an association for the deaf. We managed to
raise a considerable amount of money and this
was much appreciated. Another very successful
project was the “One-to-One Day” hosted
by the Cape Town Lions Club at the Good Hope Centre.
Girls volunteered to look after a mentally disabled
child at a fun-filled day of games and loads of
prizes. This experience really made a difference
to the girls and to the people they helped.
This year we have many exciting projects planned,
so keep your ears and eyes open for any collections
or voluntary work that comes up. We really need
the support of the whole school to make a difference
in our community.
We as the SOCS Committee of 2008 challenge Rhenish
to make a positive impact on the community this
year!
