This subject as part of the FET syllabus is now in place. Here follows a brief summary of the structure of the training:
Practical Component:
Educational guidelines dictate that Dance Study learners are to undergo practical training in one of the WCED recognised genres as their major training style. A second style is to be studied as a minor. At present Contemporary dance is the subject major, and African Dance (compulsory as specified by National ED) is studied as the minor.
The choice of Contemporary dance as major facilitates a uniform, widely applicable training within the subject, and eliminates the unmanageable logistics of offering several different dance styles simultaneously. Contemporary dance affords a good training and is beneficial in assisting development in any other technique. The genre is particularly suited to innovation and creativity regarding composition work. The learners are encouraged to continue training in their other preferred styles (such as Ballet & Latin), should they wish to do so. Ballet as practical major will be considered in 2009, should there be sufficient numbers requesting this.
Practical training includes (Contemporary) technique classes and composition and choreography classes. It is expected that learners will attend a minimum of 2 technique classes (compulsory), AND a composition/choreography (compulsory) class each week. Additional rehearsals may be required, depending on performance tasks.
Theory Component:
The Arts Education opportunities included in Dance Studies are comparable to related arts subjects such as Drama, Music and Visual Art/ Design. Learners are encouraged and equipped to become ‘thinking’ dancers. A wide range of skill- building processes are involved in the study of dance, including:
-
Health care and anatomical considerations;
-
Contextual analysis afforded by the study of set dance works;
-
Dance history development within the context of world and cultural history is considered;
-
Music as it pertains to dance is studied.
Additional theory training relating to choreography, composition and performance links to practical assessment tasks throughout the year.
Compulsory theory classes are generally expected to be 1 hour per week. Additional holiday tasks will be required.
Fees:
At present, lessons as stated (compulsory) above are charged at
R700-00 per term per learner (this amount includes studio rental fees).
Should additional/ supplementary classes be desired, additional fees are to be negotiated.
