Debating

(Rhenish is also active in Public Speaking)

World Schools' Debating

Rhenish can look back proudly on another fine year of debating in the Boland League.

After starting on a shaky note and losing their first debate, the Senior A Team settled down and did not concede any further defeats during the year.  They were crowned worthy winners of the league in the finals against Paul Roos.

In the finals the whole team debated with aplomb, but Gené MacAravey especially, was on top form. I would like to pay tribute to Gené. Most of the success of our debating society the past few years has come from the work put in by this remarkable young lady.  Long may her legacy live at Rhenish.

Supporting Gené we had Joëlle Rodseth and Helenè-Mari v.d. Westhuizen as first and second speakers, both fulfilling their roles to virtual perfection. But then we must also thank Kryšia Wells-Stoddard and Jessica de Villiers for their help in supporting the team in the prep sessions for the semis and the finals. Well done, girls.

Our Senior B Team and the Junior Team can be equally proud of what they achieved this year. The junior team narrowly lost in the semi-finals against Paul Roos.

We have some real talent in the junior ranks and with our current good structure in the club the future for debating at Rhenish looks very rosy.

Oh, as a last word, thanks to all who came to support the team in the finals. It is not often that a debating competition sounds like a sporting event!

ATKV Debatskompetisie

Monday 17 March saw two of our girls, Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen and Anna-Marie Müller taking part in the prestigious ATKV debating competition. By all accounts they spoke and debated excellently on their way to winning the regional round of this competition, and thus advancing to the semi-finals (provincial).

They then took part at the National Finals of the ATKV Debating and Public Speaking Competition in Hartenbos on 25 and 26 July 2008.  Although they did not win in the end, they did very well and we congratulate them on their amazing achievement.  Well done!

Model United Nations Debate

Over the past number of years Rhenish has built up quite a reputation in this form of debate and the expectations to do well can either be a stumbling block or a motivation. This year’s team of Helené-Mari v.d. Westhuizen and Catriona Reader, with their two partners from Kylemore High, took it as both a challenge and a motivation.

Many weeks of research, days of sifting information, long hours of preparation and a few pizzas later, we were ready for the competition this past Saturday.   The topic was the viability of Bio-fuels and we represented India in this mock up of a real UN debate.

What more can I say than: brilliant, and well done!  The result came down to a split decision between the four adjudicators with the chairperson casting the final vote, in favour of Bishops.

We can walk proud as runners-up in this prestigious debating competition!  To me personally it was an honour to have worked with such fine young people as I had in the team this year. Thanks, Helenè-Mari and Catriona.
