ALL GIRLS’ SCHOOLS’ SPORT AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL: 30 April

On Wednesday 30 April,13 hockey girls, 8 netball players, 4 debaters and 4 accompanying coaches boarded Kulula for Port Elizabeth, to take part in this great annual event that sees the top 20 girls’ schools pitted against one another in a range of sporting codes and cultural events.

We woke up to rain and lightning on Thursday morning but that did not stop us from playing competitive matches, or having heated debates.   The hockey and netball teams each played 3 – 4 matches a day in the pool competition, with the hockey team going through to play off for a final placing.  The debaters had 4 contests in all.

Even though most of our time in PE was occupied by the tournament itself, we still made time to enjoy the peacefulness of the city, go to the beach, and play a few games of squash.  Overall we had lots of fun on this tour, made unforgettable memories, and learnt more about our passion for sport/speaking.

On behalf of all the girls who took part I would like to thank the teachers and coaches who went along on the tour, and also Mr and Mrs Commaille for their support.

Dominique ter Huurne

vs. Eunice,  0:2 loss

Rhenish came 6th out of 19 participating school teams.

We will be hosting this Festival in 2010 – start signing up now to be part of the Organising Team – we are going to need an army to make sure that things run smoothly.

1st TEAM HOCKEY RESULTS: 19 April 2008

  • Rhenish placed 2nd in the round robin section of the Hermanus Hockey Tournament on 19 April 2008 and  then had to face Paarl Girls’ High in the final.   Thanks to some confident strokes and fine goal-keeping by Barbara Foguet we won on penalty shoot outs and came home boasting gold medals and a trophy.
  • We have been triumphant in our first two Koshuis League matches of the season, beating Medics 1 - 0 and Sonop 3 – 1.
  • We beat the St Stithians touring side 2 – 1

U16A HOCKEY AND NETBALL TOUR

The two teams (U16A Hockey and U16A Netball) will be going on tour to Mossel Bay from 28 March - 2 April, to take part in the Mossel Bay Sports’ Tournament.   Approximately 1,200 children will be taking part in three sporting codes, viz. hockey, netball and rugby.   Report to follow soon.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2007:
  • U/16A Tour to Mossel Bay
  • 1st team tour to "All Girls' Sports Festival"
  • Derby Day against Herschel on the University Astro
  • Winter's Day against Bloemhof on the University Astro
  • U/18 international hockey festival in Cape Town for the 1st team
  • Inter-house hockey
  • Play against and host touring teams
  • Team builders and camps

At Rhenish we play strong hockey. Our teams are coached by experienced Matie students and regularly practise on the Astro. The first team coach, Sam Henery, is a professional coach who is coaching the Western Cape U/18A team for the second year after having coached the Boland A team for many years.

Rhenish hockey had a very successful season in 2007 and we hope to shoot many goals into the back of the box this year..

 1st team results in 2007:

  • 5th out of 20 schools in the National Girls' Sports Festival in Bloemfontein. Rhenish was the only team not to lose against Eunice, the host and winning team at the festival.
  • 2nd in the Stellenbosch University Student Koshuis League. The team performed excellently throughout the season.
  • A first & second team will be touring to Malaysia during the April holidays.
