Music is offered as a subject at Rhenish Girls'
High School.
After school on Monday 11 August the Rhenish orchestra clambered into our two buses on our way to the Montagu Youth Arts Festival. After a little mishap (which involved Ms van Wyk’s having to return to Rhenish to pick up an abandoned member…) we were on our way.
The restaurant where we had supper had apparently never seen so many people before. The rather long wait made us appreciate the food even more, though. With our hunger stilled, we went on to play wonderfully at the Festival and were awarded 88% overall.
Breakfast at a padstalletjie completed the lovely tour. A big thanks to Ms van Wyk, our conductor; Mrs Van Amstel, our musical advisor; and Ms Sarga and Mr Kidd, our two great chauffeurs.
Catriona Reader
From the 13th to the 14th of July three Grade 11 pupils took part in the .
Catriona Reader and Rhenish old-girl Helen Taylor played the violin in the symphony orchestra under direction of Maestro Jonas Alber. They performed with world-renowned solo violinists Daniel Rowland and Frank Stadler, as well as cellist Peter Martens.
Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen (oboe) and Rebecca Moskoff (violin) took part in the concert orchestra. They entertained the audience with inter-active works by Maestro Peter van Dijk (who was also the conductor). One featured comedian Casper de Vries.
The festival also included public master classes, as well as lunch hour and afternoon concerts where student ensembles, including the Rhenishers, took part.
Every evening the Festival faculty members performed a wide range of awe-inspiring popular and less well-known works. This was an enriching musical experience where both national and international friendships were made.
There are some truly talented girls at Rhenish
and they have achieved wonderful results during
the past year.
