| Many Rhenishers
participate in other sports outside school. On
this page we want to celebrate these .
Catriona Reader has already obtained top honours in public speaking, debating, singing, violin and now she is the best dancer in the Western Cape!
Catriona recently danced her Advanced 1 Cecchetti ballet exam. She was then chosen to perform at the Western Cape Awards’ Evening, where she was placed first in the province in the Advanced 1 Category!
We are extremely proud of this modest young girl’s cultural prowess – well done, Catriona!!
RHENISH DANCERS EXCEL!
NICOLE BALLENTINE won the TDA Junior Balllet Championships in Cape Town on Saturday 20 September 2008. Two weeks before the Championships Nicole had to perform her own choice solo as well as a set dance and was chosen as one of the top 5 dancers. These 5 dancers then had to perform in front of 3 different judges at the Finals for the TDA Eisteddfod, where Nicole was adjudged the outright winner of the TDA Junior Ballet Championship.
At the TDA Eisteddfod Nicole also won her own choice solo for 15 – 17 years with 94,67%. She was also part of the winning ballet trio 17 – 19 years; the winning ballet quartet 17 – 19 years and the winning ballet group 17 – 19 years.
Nicole is a member of the Tutu Ballet School in Stellenbosch, run by Marike Hendriksz and Danielle Botha.

RHENISHERS MAKE IT INTO THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS!!!
The BIGGEST BALLET CLASS EVER took place at Canal Walk on Sunday 24 August. 983 ballerinas danced their way into the Guinness Book of Records at this fun event, and our very own Paula Buitendag and Nicole Ballentine were part of it all. The class was followed by a magnificent performance by Cape Town City Ballet, Jikeleza and the Cape Junior Ballet Company, of which Nicole is a member. Well done girls!
Shelley Robinson, who was chosen to represent WP in Power Boating and went on to win the Best Driver’s Award at the Championships! Congratulations! She also won her T250 class in the Theewaterskloof Grand Prix earlier this year. Power Boat Racing is traditionally a male sport, but the boys had to move over for this Gr 10 Rhenisher!
Rhenish is thrilled to announce that Kirsten van der Walt, a judo player at Kadoshi Judo Club in Somerset West, represented Boland at the South African Judo Championships in Port Elizabeth from 29 June to 5 July 2008. She won a silver medal in the girls U/15 - U/52kg category, and was in the U/15 Boland girls’ team which came fourth at the national champs.
For the first time ever, Western Province won the Inter-Provincial Highland Dancing Competition which took place in Cape Town on Saturday 5 April! And helping them to take the title were three Rhenishers: Taryn Ballentine, Anouk van Niekerk, and Sandi Visser.
Each province had to do two choreography pieces that they presented on the day of the competition - one for dancers over 16 (Anouk) and one for dancers under 16 (Sandi and Taryn). Western Province won both these choreography pieces as well! Well done girls - you really did Rhenish proud!
Nicole Ballentine was one of 17 young Cape Junior Ballet dancers who recently participated in "Dance Algarve 2008 !” , a four-day dance course specialising in classical ballet that was hosted by the Associação da Dança Ibérica at the Centro Cultural in Lagos, Portugal, from 19 to 22 March.
The extremely gifted young South African dancers, under the direction of Miss Dianne Cheesman, performed a varied programme of classical, modern and African-inspired choreographies, to an audience of fellow students, dance professionals and local enthusiasts. Their three performances were rapturously received and audiences were captivated by the standard and quality of their technique, as well as their artistic interpretation.
Gabriella Brigando, Danielle Chalmers and Jessica Klaarenbeek who achieved Honours with Distinciton (90%+) for their recent Ballroom Dance examinations.

Hermine Greyling was busy – and successful – during the past June holidays: she took part in the SA Girls U18 Golf Championships in Orkney, and ended a marvelous 7th out of 160 players. In the SA Rosebowl U18 held in Bloemfontein she won the best 3rd round, and ended 10th out of 60 players.
Just look at her impressive list of achievements in the past:
- ended 20th out of 150 players, and 9th out of the U/18s in the SA Amateur tournament;
- is one of the three players who has been selected to represent Boland A
Senior Team at the 72 Hole in May 2008;
- played the Ernie Els World Junior Invitational in the April holidays and
ended 6th out of the top 30 girls;
- took part in the ACER Women’s SA Open Golf Championships in Durban earlier this year. In a field of 90 players, two-thirds of whom were professional senior golfers, she came 50th overall – a truly remarkable achievement for a 17-year-old! Hermine was placed 14th out of all the amateurs in the competition, and 4th out of the juniors;
- achieved a 1st place in the Strand Women’s Club Championships on 10 & 11 March.
- was the SA Games - U/18 winner, as well as over-all
winner in the Girls’ Section;
|
|
 |
- was the Boland Junior
Champion in the Boland Championships for the 2nd year running.
- 3rd in the Senior Boland Champs;
- played the Raymond Gus Ackerman WP Champs.
9
of our 11 provinces were represented in this
tournament, and teams from Namibia and the Netherlands
also took part. Hermine came 6th out of a very
strong field that contained 10 SA and 3 Dutch
players. She also came 3rd in the U/21 Section
in which 50 Juniors participated.
Keep it up Hermine, – Rhenish is proud
