2008 YOUNG COMMUNICATORS’ AWARDS

The annual Young Communicators’ Awards (YCA) is an important public speaking competition, sponsored jointly by Sowetan and Anglo American since 1994.

The main objective of the YCA is to improve the quality of the English communication of South Africa’s youth.  The contest is restricted to high school learners in Grades 11 and 12 whose first or home language is not English.   Contestants are required to deliver a 4 – 6 minute prepared speech, as well as an impromptu speech of 1½ - 2 minutes.

There are various elimination rounds in the contest, which culminates in a national competition.   Rhenish Girls’ High School hosted the first round of the YCA on Monday 25 February.   All high schools in Circuit 1 of the Westcoast-Winelands EMDC were invited to enter two learners and to bring supporters along.

Schools that participated were Bloemhof Girls’ High School, Cloetesville Senior Secondary, Kylemore High School, Lückhoff High School, and Rhenish Girls’ High School.

For the third consecutive year, Rhenish walked off with top honours in Circuit 1:  Anna-Marie Müller (Gr 12) was placed 1st, and Mika Stanvliet (Gr 11) came joint 2nd, together with Edwin September of Kylemore High.  Anna-Marie represented our Stellenbosch district and – of course – our school, in the regional round in Citrusdal on 6 March 2008 where she came out tops!

The next round was the provincial competition in Worcester on Saturday 15 March. The winner of this round was Sidi Moleko of Fairbairn College. She will represent the Western Cape at the national competition on 14 June 2008 in Johannesburg.
