Tennis

“To play the game is good. To win the game is better. To love the game is best!”

Tennis is a very popular summer sport at Rhenish but during winter we also practice three times a week

Rhenish tennis accommodates players of all levels. Beginners who play social tennis are coached by enthusiastic university students and Intermediate and Advanced players who play for the school team are coached by a professional and very experienced coach, Rennie Rose-Innes. Click here for dates and venues of matches.

Practice times

Wednesdays 14:30 to 15:30
Thursdays 14:30 to 16:00

During winter we train weekly to keep fit and prepare for the summer's season.

Exciting news

We have a very exciting new player in our school: Anastasia Simons (top two photos right). Towards the end of 2007 Anastasia was recruited by the Spier Tennis Academy and at the beginning of this year she moved into Grade 11, and the hostel, here at Rhenish.

She comes to us from Port Elizabeth, where she represented EP from 2001 – 2007.

Anastasia Simons is fast making a name for herself on the national and international tennis circuit:  Last week this Grade 11 learner won a prestigious senior competition - the Cape Classic Tournament - at Kelvin Grove.   And she is now one of two girls selected to represent South Africa in the IC WORLD JUNIOR CHALLENGE at the ABS Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand from 19 to 21 February.   Participating countries are:  Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Mexico, Great Britain & USA.

Our best wishes go with Anastasia – we know that she will be a worthy ambassador for her school, and her country.   Bring home the silverware, girl!

Her achievements in 2007 include the following:

  • January: Represented SA in U16 Zone 5, qualifying for the African Junior Championships.
  • April: Represented SA at the African Junior Championships in Botswana.
  • Finished 6th individually, and qualified SA to represent Africa at the world finals of the Junior Federation Cup.
  • May: Represented EP at Junior Inter-provincials
  • June-July: Selected for the ITF Touring Team to play in the North African ITF Circuit.
  • September: Represented SA and Africa at the world finals of the Junior Federation Cup.
  • October: Represented EP in the SATA Senior Inter-Provincials
  • November: Year-end ITF U18 world ranking – 436.

Welcome to Rhenish, Anastasia! We are looking forward to the contribution you are going to make to tennis at our school – not just in matches played and won, but in helping to grow the sport by inspiring our younger players.
