President's Award

Liaison:  Dr Alison Bennie

The President’s Award is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in South Africa. It is an exciting challenge to young people between the ages of 14 and 25 and encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility and service.

Participants gain valuable skills which will be with them through their lives and they must complete the requirements in each of the four sections: Service, Physical Recreation, Skill and Adventurous Journey. Each year Rhenish organises a hike (usually to the Matroosberge) so that Bronze and Silver participants are able to complete their Adventurous Journey section.

All learners are encouraged to take part in the President’s Award if they are able to, especially those who would like to study at University as TPA is recognised by tertiary institutions.

Since the last term of 2016 we have had 37 new TPA entrants, which takes the total to over 100 entrants who have enrolled in TPA at Rhenish. We have had twelve successfully completed Bronze levels, three Silver and two gold so far.  In 2017, Moya Smith, a Grade 12 learner, qualified for and was awarded her Gold Certificate.  This is an extremely difficult level to achieve and takes hours of hard work and dedication over many years.
