Gerhard Smit

Chairperson Elected Parent Member

 Gerhard is a director and conveyancer of the firm Miller Bosman le Roux Inc in Somerset West.  He has more than 22 years of legal experience in various fields of the law.

Gerhard firmly believes that the legal profession has a responsibility to make a meaningful contribution to and to be actively involved in the community.

Gerhard has previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Somerset House Primary School.  This role has given him an indepth understanding of the challenges presented to and faced by schools and management teams in today's world.

"It is a privilege to be of service to the SGB of Rhenish Girls' High School and I strive to make a useful contribution."

Harry Malila

Treasurer Elected Parent Member

Harry is the Director-General (Administrative Head) of the Western Cape Government (WCG).  He reports directly to the Premier of the Western Cape.  He directs the operations of 13 Departments, 86 000 staff members and an aggregate budget in excess of R60 million per annum.  He holds the most senior position in the WCG and is responsible to lead, co-ordinate, manage and implement the actions of the whole government in the Province, including delivery on key priorities, the vision and values of the WCG.

Harry provides strategic leadership in relation to organizational development, people management, data and information management, electronic government, integrity, ethics, conduct and anti-corruption, transformation, reform, innovation and other matters to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the government.

Harry has extensive working knowledge of the entire public sector environment, public sector policies and legislation.  He understand the importance of intergovernmental relations, possesses extensive knowledge of public management theory and financial and administrative management practices.   With more than 15 years as a senior Executive in Treasury and being responsible for the provincial budget, Harry has an in-depth understanding of fiscal, financial and economic matters and the application thereof in practice.

A dedicated and committed individual, Harry brings to the Rhenish Girls' High School SGB a wealth of experience.  He holds a PhD, an MBA and an Honours degree, all from Stellenbosch University.

Deidre Samson

Vice Chairperson Elected Parent Member

Deidre started her working career at an advertising agency where her passion for creativity, change and innovation was ignited. She has extensive corporate marketing, strategy, innovation, ideation and futures experience, having worked in private banking and in senior management positions in a leading multi-national alcoholic beverage company (Distell). 

Deidre has a BA degree majoring in Communications and Psychology (UNISA), a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing (UNISA), a Post Graduate Diploma in Future Studies - Cum Laude – (University of Stellenbosch), an MPhil Futures Studies - Summa Cum Laude and Top Student (University of Stellenbosch). Deidre is currently a candidate PHD student (University of Stellenbosch). 

Her research report focused on ‘The 4th Industrial Revolution - Structural resilience: The future of organisational structure in South Africa, 2030 and beyond’.  She used the Houston Foresight Framework as part of her report and integrated various Futures Methodologies to create scenarios and models that touched on future skills, the future world of work and the structural arrangements that organisations would require to be successful.  Her PHD Topic also focuses on the future of business in South Africa and the transformational imperatives facing leaders and employees in an age of digital and business model disruption. 

Deidre manages her own consulting firm, Future-Fit, assists the Institute for Futures Research (University of Stellenbosch Business School) as a senior research associate working on various futures thinking research projects. She is a faculty member of the University of Stellenbosch GSB Executive Development programme and the University of Free State MBA Programme. Deidre is accredited as a Prince 2 project management practitioner and Change Enablement specialist.

Deidre brings the following competencies / areas of expertise to the School Governing Body (SGB) - Strategic Foresight, Ideation, Marketing, Innovation / Design Thinking, Future of work, education and skills, Organisational Design.

I am an integrative thinker, able to assist in understanding how schools, education departments, employers and other organisations need to work together as an overall educational ecosystem to deliver learning success relevant to the future world of work. I am passionate about shaping children to be the future leaders our diverse, complex society requires. I am curious, challenge the status quo and am committed to helping organisations to think and act in a future-focused way."

Nic Shaw

Portfolio - Health and Safety Elected Parent Member

Nic Shaw is Managing Director of the Chrysalis Project South Africa. CPSA, inter alia, incorporates and manages Entabeni Adventures and Expeditions from Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. Entabeni was established in 1993 and has run environmental and adventure-based learning programmes, expeditions and fieldwork for over 100 000 youth since its inception. Entabeni is the only tour operator and adventure company in SA compliant against the safety standard BS8848, for expeditions, fieldwork, and adventurous activities and is also compliant against ISO/SANS21101/2/3 for adventure tourism.

Nic has a background in Geography and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in London. He received training from the RGS, the Royal Airforce ACO, and the Duke of Edinburgh Assessor’s Scheme in expedition and excursion safety management; and has specialized in risk management in the outdoors. He is currently in a working group to establish safety standards for the South African adventure industry, and on four ISO technical committees for adventure tourism. He has a passion for mountains and is an active mountain rescue practitioner in KZN and the Western Cape. He is also a keen mountain biker, trail runner and triathlete.

Nic feels strongly that the outdoors can be a place of healing and great learning and that mountains, rivers and wild spaces should be available to all, and can be a source of income through training and developing local guides.

Nic's in depth knowledge and understanding of safety standards makes him the ideal head of our Health and Safety portfolio where he provides invaluable guidance, especially during the time of this pandemic.

Renier Smith

Portfolio - Infrastructure Elected Parent Member

Renier is a civil engineer by profession and he works for the Garden Cities group of companies, as their Group Manager for Engineering & Planning.  He has been with Garden Cities since 1996, after he had completed his studying and he is in charge of the civil engineering, planning, environmental and major project portfolio for most of these 25 years. 

Renier has a substantial degree of expertise relating to town planning, civil and electrical engineering, environmental aspects, occupational health & safety, housing developments in various economic markets, commercial projects and various degrees of construction and project management expertise.

In his work capacity I represent my company on various Homeowners Associations,  The Sunningdale Sports Facilities also fall under him, as well as several other committees and portfolios.

Renier developed the Company’s Green Policy and he is currently busy with the first Green Star Rated Community Precinct GBCSA (Green Building Council of South Africa) in Africa.  He has attended to various types of projects from inception to final delivery, ranging from Sports Clubs, Schools, town ship developments, ECD Facilities, Service Stations, Music Academy, School Halls (GC’s CSI Investment Project, the Archway Foundation), Crèche sites, Storage developments, local and regional shopping centres and even out-of-box type projects like the Leadville Dog Park in Sunningdale, a Bike Park presently being planned, Fives Futbol facilities, as well as a Swim School Academy in and outside these developments.

Renier has served on the Rhenish Girls' High SGB as an elected member with the Maintenance & Infrastructure Portfolio.  In this time he has completed the following projects at Rhenish:

- Upgrading of Ebenezer Hall (Various aspects) 
- Additional classrooms constructed.
- Aquatic Facility.
- Repair and replacement of the surface area around school and courtyard area.
- Hockey astro-turf court lighting.
- New mini astro-turf court.
- Various land related matters.
- Borehole and spring supply water for school use.
- Design and construction of Creative Corner.
- Development Master Plan & Concept Framework macro planning.
- Upgrading of electrical supply to school, hostel and existing outdoor facilities.
- Various flooring projects; including the actual school corridors.
- Various future projects that are in planning stages.
- Music & Drama facilities presently being planned.
- Roof replacement project with WCED.
- Volley ball sand court.

Natasha Whiteboyd

Portfolio - Culture Elected Parent Member

Natasha is a mother, a wife and an entrepreneur.  She holds a degree in Business Administration and she has been a Rhenish parent for 6 years.  She would like to use her three remaining years at Rhenish to contribute and to be as much a part of the life of the school as she can.

"I have seen both my girls blossom into independent, strong and fierce women and I know that the school has contributed largely to that.  I am excited to serve the Rhenish family and to contribute to impacting more lives."

Natasha is a passionate, positive and inspirational team player with 23 years experience in Finance.  She has excellent communication and presentation skills and she is able to negotiate at all levels.

Verna Eagles

Portfolio - Sport Elected Parents Member

Verna is something of an HR expert - since 2019 she has owned and run her own HR business.  Here she provides HR expertise to businesses in areas such as Process Maps for HR functional areas, Talent Acquisition, Change programmes, Policy updates, Training and facilitation and Coaching.  Prior to this, Verna was the Head of HR for a National Corporate.

Verna has served on the SGB at Rhenish Girls' for 4 years and she supports the Sporting Portfolio.  She has two daughters.  The eldest is a Rhenish old girl who was also a hostel dweller and her youngest daughter is now a day scholar.  She is familiar with school policy and governance and the challenges and opportunities that the School Management team faces on a daily basis.

"As a parent, I am familiar and proud of what the school offers our girls and because my daughter also stayed at hostel, I am familiar with the hostel and its requirements."
